Denton is the county seat of Caroline County, with a population of roughly 4,800 along the banks of the Choptank River. Settled in 1781 and originally called Eden Town, Denton grew as a trading center for the surrounding agricultural region, with steamboat service to Baltimore running from the 1840s into the 1920s. The town's early economy included canning and lumber alongside agricultural shipping, and downtown Denton retains a historic commercial district anchored by the county courthouse. Today Denton functions as Caroline County's civic and commercial hub, home to county government offices, the Caroline County Public Library, and a Main Street revitalization program focused on the historic downtown. The Museum of Rural Life and the Adkins Arboretum, just outside town near Tuckahoe State Park, support a modest tourism economy alongside the town's role as a service center for the surrounding farming community. With Route 404 connecting Denton to both the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and the Delaware beaches, the town serves as a practical waypoint as well as the administrative seat of one of the Mid Shore's most agricultural counties.
